Judging from the general audience buzz afterwards, many among the happy crowd — sharing the general exhilaration that follows an exceptional evening of operatic art — seemed almost shocked that both were works they had never heard — nor even heard of — before...Both operas were blessed to have the same terrific creative team. Conductor Maurizio Barbacini's deft baton kept the music under firm yet emotionally potent control... Director Stefano Vizioli conspired with his colleagues to craft a most effective all-around production set in a 1950's milieu. Mese Mariano merely got heavy applause; Le Villi got a raucous standing O. ..It may well have terrified us — and the music may have had more of a genius's touch—– but it was Mese that made most of us cry. Well-done Italian opera can do that to you. Lindsay Koob
The festival has also enterprisingly united, at the Sottile Theatre, two interesting operas from Italy’s post-Verdi tradition in absorbing productions by Stefano Vizioli.
the Wall Street Journal
Director Stefano Vizioli, set designer Neil Patel, costume designer Roberta Guidi di Bagno and lighting designer Matt Frey created a coherent look for the two pieces: The plain but appealing 1930s orphanage for "Mese Mariano" included a large blow-up of a child's drawing. For "Le Villi," we moved into more symbolic territory, with a room decorated with flowered wallpaper whose pattern extended to the women's 1950s dresses. The Willis, not dead but mad, wore asylum shifts, the lacquered flip hairdos of their previous lives as party guests exchanged for wild, torn wigs. During their dance (Pierluigi Vanelli's delightfully grotesque choreography of writhing and grimacing), they ripped off the wallpaper to reveal a padded cell. It was a clever way to inject some vigor into the opera's second half and supply a modern twist to this old Romantic cautionary tale.
the Post and Courier
The close collaboration among Vizioli, Guidi di Bagno, set designer Neil Patel, choreographer Pierluigi Vanelli and lighting designer Matt Frey paid off, for these aesthetic details, so expertly emphasized, were enough to provoke a small shudder of emotion...Once it had occurred to me that Vizioli was transporting the action into a psychological realm, I was quick to appreciate the choice. director Stephano Vizioli, his team of designers, and the festival orchestra led by Maurizio Barbacini have done a magnificent job.
